Regenerative cotton

Cotton is at the heart of what we do at Lindex. It’s in the clothes we wear, the fabrics we touch, and the choices we make. But the way cotton is grown has a profound impact on people and the planet. That’s why we are committed to transforming the cotton supply chain – starting from the very source.

Why farm cotton?

We believe in responsibility. In driving change. In creating a fashion industry that respects both people and nature. By 2030, all our virgin cotton will come directly from farmers we collaborate with, ensuring a transition to organic and regenerative agriculture, while increasing traceability and transparency. In 2024, 5 per cent of our virgin cotton came directly from farmers we collaborate with.

This is not just about sourcing cotton. It’s about building partnerships, strengthening communities, and securing a future where sustainability and profitability go hand in hand – for the farmers and for our business.

Regenerative cotton: a new way forward

Shifting to regenerative cotton is a journey. For farmers, it takes five to six years of dedication, investment, and learning to transition from conventional methods to regenerative organic farming. The soil must heal, biodiversity must return, and new techniques must be mastered. It’s a process, but one that holds the key to a more resilient and sustainable future.

At Lindex, we are committed to supporting farmers during this transformation. We collaborate closely with over thousands of farmers at different stages of this journey, providing the stability and resources they need to succeed. Regenerative farming doesn’t just improve soil health – it strengthens communities and creates a more transparent cotton industry.

Approaches to regenerative agriculture are shaped by place, context, and communities - meaning there is no single definition that is fitting for every use case. Instead, it is about identifying and implementing solutions that are designed with the people and landscapes they serve.

A transparent and sustainable supply chain

Once the cotton is harvested by farmers, it moves through carefully selected partners, from ginners to spinners, and from fabric mills to garment manufactures. By connecting the material throughout the supply chain, we are strengthening both transparency and traceability. Through direct partnerships, we do not only secure high-quality cotton, but also support farming practices that promote healthier soils and increased biodiversity compared to conventional cotton farming.

Cotton is one of the most important materials in our collections - without it, Lindex wouldn’t be Lindex. That’s why we are determined to source it in the best way possible. Because every thread matters, and every choice we make today shapes the future of fashion.

Facts about regenerative cotton

Regenerative cotton refers to farming practices that restore and improve soil health, biodiversity, and local communities. It involves techniques such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and no-till farming to create a more resilient agricultural system. Our role in supporting regenerative cotton:

  • Supporting soil regeneration by working with farmers who implement practices that improve soil fertility and structure.
  • Collaborating on projects that explore carbon sequestration opportunities in regenerative farming. Encouraging biodiversity through agricultural methods that support diverse ecosystems.
  • Partnering with farmers to explore water retention techniques that enhance the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, reducing irrigation needs.
  • Ensuring safe and fair working conditions through close collaboration and long-term commitments.

From conventional to regenerative

Conventional cotton farming relies heavily on synthetic chemicals, which contributes to soil degradation and water pollution. Better Cotton in turn, represents a step forward, using fewer pesticides and improving water management practices. Organic Cotton excludes synthetic chemicals and focuses on composting and crop rotation. Regenerative Organic Cotton goes even further, aiming to enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and capture carbon from the atmosphere.

By investing in regenerative cotton, we are making a commitment - not only to a supply chain with increased traceability and direct farmer partnerships but also to improved soil health and biodiversity, supporting farmers in their transition to more resilient agricultural practices.
